Caged Bird

Please don’t give your love to me
because love’s a cunning thief
with faults like man’s beliefs
that left your heart emptied.

Please don’t give your love to me
because love’s a migrant leaf
that lands and quickly leaves
like a pheasant in the streets.

Please don’t give your love to me
because love’s abruptly brief
like a caged bird thus released
from pain he finds relief.

To Father, Mother, Brother, & Lover

My father gave me his father’s name
My mother gave me the fear
My brother blessed me with words
My lover fulfilled the curse

My father hated his father
My mother left me at home
My brother’s eyes showed the hurt
My lover’s heart was returned

My father’s father died alone
My mother’s mother as well
My brother and I will spade the dirt
My lover’s love is inert

My father will return to his father
My mother will do the same
My brother will rest in the earth
My lover and I will disperse
